One of the major challenges in my brother’s case was that he was an athletic, exceptionally strong guy with a temper an outsized sense of right and wrong (even when he was on the wrong side of things). This made it very hard to try to help him—he was convinced the world was against him, and attempts to help often just confirmed his suspicions. I think in the end we collectively gave up—and some of us never tried in the first place.
