CS 373 Fall 2019 Week 10, Megan Mealey
Nov 4 · 2 min read
- What did you do this past week? Last week I worked on projects for school and I did not do much else. I also saw the UT production of Rocky Horror Picture Show, which a lot of my roommates were in, and it was very good. I had an interview for an internship that went well, and there’s a follow-up next week. I also looked at ways to be more productive, and one of my friends recommended an app called Toggl that lets you time how long you have been working on certain projects. I am going to start using it and I hope it will help me make better use of my time.
- What’s in your way? Nothing in particular is in my way. I just need to put in the time to get my work done. I’ve been working on time management, and I’m trying to keep track of how much time I spend working so I can see whether I’ve been productive or not.
- What will you do next week? Next week I will finish phase 3 of IDB (!) and work on projects for my other classes, and hopefully do well in the interviews I have scheduled. I’m also going to the Renaissance Festival next weekend, which I am very excited about. I also have to do some work for the student orgs I’m in.
- What was your experience of SQL? The lessons in SQL made sense. I had some experience from my internship over the summer, so I already know some of the basics. It is still helpful to review the basics so that it is fresh in my mind.
- What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week? My pick-of-the-week is this Forbes article on an emergency Google Chrome update released last week: https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinder/2019/11/01/new-google-chrome-security-alert-update-your-browsers-as-high-severity-zero-day-exploit-confirmed/amp/. Although Google probably will not release details about the bugs any time soon, it is interesting to see that there were exploits already published. It is also interesting to imagine what went on behind the scenes at Google. The engineers who had to make the patch probably had to drop their planned projects and put all their effort towards fixing the browser vulnerability. Part of the agile process is being flexible and being able to change your plans as emergencies come up.
