Siva, I often ask myself the same questions.
Two quick thoughts:
(1) We always make a choice, as the possibilities for exploration are limitless. What I like to do here is (a) choose something that means the most to me (family over, say, algebraic set theory) and (b) explore things that make future exploration easier (if I learn to think clearly, the rest of life is easier, etc.).
(2) The point is not to ignore to news, but to accept this: the more time you spend on the news, the more noise you get and the less signal. (Journalists have to write regardless of whether there is anything to write about.) So reading the news daily compared to once a month gets your further from the truth, further from a healthy perspective.
