The U.S. has a rich history of cannabis in its culture, starting from the early colonists. Earlier hemp was grown for textiles and ropes. But in the 20th century, cannabis was criminalized at the federal level in the United States. This happened mainly due to political and racial elements. But, marijuana has been a part of our planet for long before that. It was used as the herbal medicine in Asia in 500 BC. The growth of hemp or cannabis started in Central Asia and then reached Africa and Europe. And finally, it was in America. The seeds of this plant were used as food. The colonies of Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut made farmers grow hemp. These plants had a very low concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC gives the plant its psychoactive effects or the famous “high”.

History of Medical Marijuana

Sir William Brooke O’Shaughnessy was studying in India when he figured out that marijuana extracts were helping people. Those extracts were reducing the stomach problems pain associated with cholera. Sir William Brooke was an Irish doctor and he discovered this in the 1830s. And as a result, by the late 1800s, marijuana extracts were available at pharmacies and clinics in Europe and the U.S. they were used as a treatment of stomach problems and some more ailments.

Later researchers found that the reason behind the medical properties of marijuana was THC. Which was also responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana. THC helped the brain to lessen nausea, but it also causes hunger. In current times, two drugs with THC are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These prescribed pills are used to treat nausea due to cancer chemotherapy. These are also helpful for the AIDs patients suffering from the loss of appetite.

What About Recreational Marijuana Then?

Recreational marijuana is connected to religious history. Herodotus, a historian from ancient Greek wrote about the Scythians using marijuana seeds and flowers for their rituals. Scythians were Iranian nomads from Central Asia. Herodotus explained that they used to inhale the smoke of marijuana seeds and flowers to get high.

After about 800 AD, there was a rise in the use of hashish (or hash) in the Middle East and some other parts of Asia. It became more famous along with the spreading of Islam. Many followers of Islam believed that the alcohol and some other intoxicating materials are banned according to the Quran; but it doesn’t include the forbidding of marijuana specifically.

The use of marijuana was done for medical purposes in the United States until the early 1900s. The recreational use of marijuana was introduced in the US due to the Mexican Revolution. The immigrants brought the culture of smoking cannabis with them. But the US saw the huge unemployment and unrest in the society during the “Great Depression” period. There was bitterness towards the Mexican immigrants and people of the US started treating weed as an evil substance. All this resulted in the prohibition on the use of weed.

Finally, Marijuana Legalization!

President Richard Nixon registered cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug. This list also includes heroin, LSD, and ecstasy. This was done under the “War on Drugs” movement. But in 1972, a report was released with the title “Marijuana: A signal if Misunderstanding”. Partial prohibition on cannabis, and lower penalties for possessing small amounts; these were recommended in the report. After all the struggles, came the Compassionate Use Act of 1996. Which made California the first state to legalize the medical use of cannabis. Gradually other states also started legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes. There are 33 states now that have legalized the medical use of cannabis.

Marijuana and its legalization have covered a lot of time, and more people than ever are now turning their heads toward it. The medical benefits of this herb have helped it gain a huge fan following across the country.
