7 Ways to Be a Great Person

Through the use of camping analogies, below are listed seven natural ways by which which we can work towards being a great person. Granted, ‘great’ is relative and far from an easy concept to define, this non-comprehensive list is meant to provide only a glimpse into the foundation of some of the more salient aspects of life that may deserve our attention, aspects that we can see illuminated by an immersion into the wilderness.

  1. Fan the spark when creating a fire
    Call someone out for the good they try to do rather than criticizing them for their good (but possibly misguided) choice to be better. If your leather-clad friend goes vegetarian, supporting them rather than pointing out their contradictions will go a long way. Motivate rather than question or judge.
  2. Dip your toes in the water
    Try different things to get different perspectives on life. Don’t just shut an idea down because it doesn’t fit your concept of yourself or avoid doing something or speaking to someone because of assumptions. Keep an open mind and appreciate other perspectives.
  3. Close the tent door to keep the bugs out
    Sometimes, no words are better than bad or retaliatory words. It’s often more rewarding to not retort, to take the high road, to not engage others in negative interactions, though it may be exceptionally difficult in the moment. Whilst words may be more tempting…
