Dear Summer
Dear summer,
Why do you have to be so hot? I just want to be able to wear comfortable clothing outside without sweating profusely. You see, when it’s chilly outside, you can layer up to stay warm. However, when it’s hot out, you have no choice but to suck it up and be hot, which is the most uncomfortable feeling.
Unlike most people, I hate you. I hate even being outside in the summer; I prefer to be inside with the cool air conditioning. The only reason I like you is because we don’t have school. I am able to do nothing for 3 months, so thanks for that. Other than that, I just sit inside and wait for fall to come, counting down the days where I am able to walk outside and feel the fresh sensation of cool air. There is no way I can feel this when you come around. All you bring me is exhaustion.
I prefer fall and winter over you any day. I can bury myself under blankets and wear fuzzy socks to stay warm. I can sit by the fireplace and enjoy a nice cup of hot cocoa. I can even put on multiple layers of clothing. There are an endless amount of methods you can use to stay warm in the fall and winter season. Now what can you do to stay cool in the summer? Put ice packs all over your body? Stick your head in the fridge? There is no way to escape the heat. Yes you can turn on the air conditioning, but this is especially difficult when you have parents who do not believe in turning it on after being “cooped up” all winter. How am I supposed to be able to sleep when both fans are on, the window is open, yet I still am suffocating from heat. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to not wake up soaked in my own sweat. Maybe it would be okay if you came for only a month after winter, just for a change from the cold weather. I have become a little more tolerable of your weather over the years, but I'm still not a fan. Anyways, I also hate how every fun outdoor activity takes place in the summer as well. For example, the fair. I like going to the fair, but it is hard to enjoy my time when it is too hot to breathe properly. Why can’t fairs take place in the fall? That would be much more enjoyable.
Although I despise your temperature, I guess there are a few positives to your time of year. I do enjoy waking up knowing I don’t have to do anything that day. No alarms, no plans, and lots of free time. I also enjoy swimming every once in awhile, which is preferred in warm weather. That’s about it though, I still don’t like you.
Your time of year also can get pretty obnoxious. Everyone around me talks about how excited they are for summer, while I am dreading it; other than school ending of course. I spend most of my time begging my parents to turn on the air conditioning rather than having a good time outside. Adding onto the list, my mom also yells at me to go outside for some fresh air. That is the last thing I want to be doing. Everyday just becomes the same routine.
I also spend a large amount of my time watching the weather. I love rain and storms, so I sit inside waiting for the storm clouds to arrive. Storms don’t usually come in the fall, so I suppose that’s another good thing about you. After months of this, I finally begin to feel relieved when September comes around. This means I won’t have to see you for many months. When you leave, I get to hear everyone complaining about how cold they are, while I'm thinking the complete opposite. Maybe I just have a higher body temperature or something, but I feel perfectly comfortable in chilly weather, where as everyone else claims to be freezing cold.
After you’ve spent your time with us, I feel a sensation of happiness. I don’t have to deal with you anymore, which is a huge relief. I just wish you could come around for a month and let fall last longer, but I guess there’s nothing I can do about it.
