5 Things I Wish I Knew Freshman Year

MBU senior double major in journalism and communications

1) Community is Key

I give you all a big congratulations that you just completed high school. You’re ready to learn new information about your chosen major. Before you jump into your major classes, it’s a lot of fun being around a diverse group. You are only able to have classes with all majors in gen eds for a semester and believe me, it goes way faster than you think.

2) College Eats

We’re lucky to have a great, healthy dining hall on campus along with a full-service coffee shop. If you’re not sure what to get on the huge list of caffeinated options at The Perk, consider trying out the Carmella Compana. It may become your new go-to drink. In the cafeteria, be sure go to Stir Fry Mondays, a favorite among Spartans. Also the sandwich line is always long, but for a reason—it’s always worth it.

3) Make New Friends

Find friends outside of your team, major and roommates. Find a local church or small group to plug into. When trying to “find yourself” in college, follow God and I promise He will show you opportunities you never imagined.

4) Call Your Mom and Dad

They know you better than anyone else. When a game didn’t go well or if you’re confused about financial aid, call them. Share the highlights with them, too. This was a big life change for you, but it was also a big change for them as well. Let them know you love them. I guarantee it will make your day better.

5) Stay on Track

There are so many exciting things going on when you’re a new Spartan, it’s easy to lose track of time and deadlines. It’s important to maintain the habit of attending class every day. I also never thought I needed a planner. What would I even write in it? After syllabus day, I always write all of the important assignments, tests and off days. This is especially helpful in avoiding getting to your 8 a.m. only realize everyone’s still asleep because there wasn’t supposed to be class that day. And keep your planner written in pencil. Dates change and you don’t want to have “Chem Midterm” written on three different dates. In college, you will also relearn how much you love naps—so schedule those in advance as well.

These four years will be filled with some of the best memories so far. Enjoy the beginning of a new chapter. You have a wonderful story ahead.

Bonus Spartan insider tip: The top of the SRC is a great place for group project meetings.
