MBU Senior Stories: Rebekah “Rebe” Rutledge
Journalism (minor in public relations) | St. Louis | MBU Timeline, Circle K International

What advice would you give to your freshman self?
I would tell my freshman self to not be afraid of what others thought. If we are being honest, college is a time where everyone is trying to figure out who they are and what they want to do with the rest of their life, nobody cares about what anyone else is doing, so go! Be adventurous. Be loud. Be you.
Favorite MBU hangout?
My favorite MBU hangout is the Perk. I have spent tons of time in there doing homework and hanging out in between classes.
Favorite spot on campus?
The Mac lab in the fine arts department. It is not just where most of my classes were, but also where I made some great friends and learned some very important lessons, academic and otherwise.
Favorite Perk drink?
I love when it’s fall and they have the caramel apple cider — so good.
Tell us your favorite MBU memory.
When Circle K International (CKI) went to the National Share Balloon Release. It was such a moving day and amazing to be part of with my fellow CKI members and MBU students.
Funniest memory?
The CKI lip sync in 2015. I was in charge of it and totally nervous about it, but once it started, we had tons of participation. It was hilarious to see everyone singing and dancing.
What does being a Spartan mean to you?
Being a Spartan means being courageous and boldly yourself. MBU encourages its students to fully be themselves and go after what they have been called to do.
What professors/staff inspired you and why?
My professors in the communications department have each inspired me in a different way, but it is Dr. Collum who probably taught me one of the biggest lessons I learned at MBU. Take his class and you will hear his story, but he taught me that no matter how tough things look, God has a plan for you and will take care of you.
How has MBU impacted your faith?
MBU has been a place where faith isn’t just something that you do, it’s something that is everywhere and no matter where you are in your walk with Christ, you are encouraged and uplifted. MBU showed me a way to ‘Shine On’ in every aspect of life.
How has MBU prepared you for your future?
Other than being prepared academically, I am instilled with confidence that I can go out and do anything that I want to. My professors made sure to be an encouraging force in my life.
What are your next steps after graduation?
I am not totally sure yet. I want to continue to write and see where that takes me.
