Russia and Jordan strike nuclear deal

Russia and Jordan just signed a deal for a nuclear plant in Jordan. Jordan imports most of its energy, and has faced unrest before when raising energy subsidies. All the same, with the intermittent flow of gas from the pipeline from Egypt, as well as unrest in Iraq, the costs of subsiding energy has expanding significantly.

It’s logical for Jordan to look for alternative sources of energy, and for help with pursuing a nuclear power plant.

What’s not logical is what the heck the United States is doing when Russia is the one striking that deal with Jordan. Foreign policy fail.

I am tired of hearing the refrain that Israel is the only US ally in the Middle East. Jordan is, too, but our inattention to the issues of Daesh, the Syrian (and Iraqi) refugee issues, and other problems, have made us a less reliable partner to them. And now Russia has a big foothold there, and we will pay for it.

The Great Game is alive and well in the MENA region, and Russia is playing it quite well. Why we wouldn’t do anything as one of our strongest partners in the region cozies up with an increasingly aggressive Russia is anyone’s best guess.

I don’t know what the administration is currently doing. We seem to be flailing around in the foreign affairs sphere, with no coherent policy, or if there is one, it’s Obama’s to hunker down and not do anything decisive, because 2016 is coming up. Good luck figuring out the administration’s approach from the FOIA… Who knows what emails former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton decided not to hand over.
