Container networking

I just saw the following tweet come across my Twitter feed.

Without knowing much about the project yet it is a little disappointing to see yet-another-overlay-networking initiative. With WeaveWorks involved it makes sense that OpenOverlay is, well, an overlay solution. Similarly Docker Inc. bought the very early stage Socketplane and that turned into libnetwork which is an overlay.

Back in March of 2016 Kelsey Hightower gave a fantastic presentation and demo called ‘There is No Such Thing as Container Networking’. It is definitely worth a watch.

IMO we really should be investing in ip-per-container (even ipv6!) and layer 3 container networks. No overlays, no NAT, reduced complexity, less software.
