Styx: Pacific Amphitheater July, 2016 for SoCalMusicToday.com
Classic Rock superstars Styx are currently on their massive 2016 North American summer tour and made a stop at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa on Friday night July 15 as part of the Toyota Concert Series that takes place every year during the OC Fair.
Since their beginning in a Chicago basement in the early 70’s, Styx has performed in arenas around the world with hit songs such as “Come Sail Away”, “Renegade” and many more. To say Styx has become rock legends is an understatement. Performing a SOLD OUT show to longtime fans from the very beginning, all the way to today’s young fans, the enthusiastic crowd provided their support though out the show from start to end of 90 minutes of fan favorites.
To start off the show was the late 70’s hit “The Grand Illusion” with guitar solos from Tommy Shaw and James Young, along with Lawrence Gowan’s on key’s with a very cool spinning keyboard and backing vocals along with Ricky Phillips on Bass with Todd Sucherman on drums. Midway through the show a cover of David Bowies “Space Oddity” an acoustic version performed by Shaw and Gowan was well received. Additional cover songs were played near the end of the set supported by audience participation that added a very fun element to the show.
A special guest appearance from original bassist Chuck Panozzo was a welcome addition to line up and he received a loud reception from the capacity crowd. A great night of music for Styx fans of all ages along with many that took advantage of taking a stroll through the Orange County Fair before the show was a perfect way to spend the afternoon with a great night of music.
The 2016 tour will support an upcoming release “Styx: Live at the Orleans Arena” which will be available on Blu-ray and DVD later this summer.
