Hand lettering has become a widespread and explosive trend in recent years, and it is inspiring many designers to add hand-lettering to their skill sets.

Maybe you’ve spent countless hours honing your hand lettering skills, or you are trying to figure out if this is a craft you need to master. Can you really make money from hand lettering?

The answer is, yes!

There are many different ways to monetize your hand lettering skills.

You can elevate commercial design, create one-of-a-kind branding materials, start a sign painting business, design custom stationery and more.

We are hosting a live online workshop on March 1st that will explore three different ways you can monetize your hand lettering skills. The workshop is being taught by three professional hand lettering artists.

We wanted to give you a peek at how these artists are making money from their hand lettering skills, and share the story behind their work.

Here are three ways you can make money from hand lettering:

1. Sign Painting

Sign Painting has become incredibly popular with small regional business owners. A hand-painted sign can instantly elevate your brand and help you stand out against the competition. No one know this better than Kurt Robert, of Very Fine Signs.

Kurt grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida and received his B.F.A. in illustration from School of Visual Arts. His work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration and like a bunch of blogs. He has worked with an incredible roster of clients including The New York Times, New York Magazine, PRINT Magazine, INC. Magazine and Time Out New York.

He discovered the art of sign painting after losing his day job, and quickly launched Very Fine Signs, a nationally recognized sign painting business.

Kurt will give you an inside look at how he built his sign painting business during our three-day live online workshop, Monetizing Your Hand Lettering Business.

2. Invitation Design

Everyone is looking for new ways to make their events unique, and hand-lettered invitations is a great way to make it happen. Meet Katherine Ross.

Katherine is the Founder of Script Merchant, which specializes in creating unique personalized invitations for special events.

She earned her BA in Anthropology from The University of the South before spending two years at the London School of Dramatic Art. Katherine had always practiced hand-lettering as a hobby but it wasn’t until 2010 that it became an actual busienss. A wedding planner encouraged Katherine to start creating custom designs for events, and she never looked back. Katherine was commissioned by dozens of wedding planners and Script Merchant was born.
