Why you should never build the next big thing!

almost each and every entrepreneur when they start their entrepreneurship journey they believe that they are going to change the world and build the next big thing, actually in my opinion this is the very first mistake they do.

they are just starting, they are small, inexperienced and most likely without any money and they think they know everything and they have all what it takes to become successful.

That’s me exactly 5 years ago, young naive, full with passion and thinking that its all about the idea, and once i have it, all the world is going to listen to me and all doors are going to open. then i learned that was not the case. actually i learned it the hard way.

Left everything behind, started doing only coding as freelancer, made some money and started to invest in my own ideas that i have. being a coder helped in every single step i took, however it was not enough to get me through.

Failed a lot and lost almost all my savings on my ideas and projects, and here’s what i learned and here’s why you should never build the next big thing!

when ever you are starting your project or startup never fall in this trap of greed and naivety. i’m going to create something new that will change the world and no one have ever heard of it before, i’m going to be the very first guy to do it and i’m going to be rich kid.

Here are just few mistakes from my point of view that you should never do!

(1) Building something new: In my opinion never ever try to build something totally new from scratch that no one have ever heard of and there’s why:

The worst job you could do is customer education, actually if you go to hell this would be your job, you must understand that educating the customer about your product is the worst thing you can do to your self when you are starting, this is going to burn all your money before you even start, imagine your self having just couple of thousands or even less in your bank account and you are trying to use this money to educate people about something totally new that you have invented? imagine it. the biggest companies in the world spend millions and millions of dollars in customer education; they survive it only because they have enough money to burn, but in your case you will be the sticks that will light up the fire and you won’t even exist by the time you finish educating 10 clients.

So whenever you start never ever ever try reinventing the wheel; what you should do is be innovative, take something that already exist today and people knows it, that solves an existing problem and add value to it, make it better, make it easier to use, make it simpler. no matter what changes you would do to it, just do not reinvent the wheel because you are too small now and believe me when i tell you “you are not going to change the world when you just started”

(2) i’m afraid people will steal my idea: its like really? common don’t by a cookie. if your idea is good and it’s worth it then people are going to steal it anyway, either now or later and believe me “the world is so big, there’s stack for everyone”, don’t keep your idea for yourself, if you want to move forward you must share it with like minded people who share the same passion about your idea and they are welling to jump in and be part of it.

then comes the big question: where do i find these people?
