10 Tips to clean up your development mac

Every mac developer find himself in a situation where no space left! this can slow up machine and frustrate the developer in this video we explore several ways to solve this annoying problem

Let us begin

Method 1 :

Run this command into terminal

sudo xcrun simctl delete unavailable

This command will clear the simulators’ files that’s can’t be used now ex: simulators with older versions of iOS

This step really helped me ( saved around 5 GBs ) -oh Yahh 🤗🤓-

Method 2 :

Delete bunch of the folders inside Library/caches

Because it’s part of user data you can safely delete them but if anybody has any additional information about this comment below 🧐

It can save up to 3GBs (depends on your case )

Method 3 :

In Xcode from window > organizer > right

click on any of previous application archives and delete them

If you want to delete them at once you can move to Library/Developer/Xcode/Archieves

And delete all of it don’t worry this is safe 😎

Method 4 :

You can find out your self what is taking a space in your Mac You can do this by listing folders with their sizes How to view the size of folders within the Finder’s list view?

Step 1: Open Finder

Step 2: In the menu bar select View → as List

Step 3: In the menu bar, select View → Show View Options

Step 4: Check the box next to Calculate all sizesDoing this will replace the double dash that normally appears under the size column for folders. No more will you be required to perform a Get Info command in order to view the size of the folders within the Finder’s list view.Additional information : https://9to5mac.com/2016/07/01/how-to-show-size-folders-finder-list-view-mac/

WARNING :

Before you delete any thing that taking up a lot of space ASK GOOGLE FIRST is it safe or not 💣

Method 5 :

Delete any application that you don’t use it very often for my case I deleted unity and some other apps that I have no longer work on them If you have 2 IDEs doing the same thing delete one of them, Remember the mac storage is very important

Method 6 :

Delete any application installers (.DMG files) You have downloaded from internet if you want them again => download them ! That’s it ! save your Mac space 🙄 or you can archive them in a secondary drive

Method 7 :

Make sure that you have only the repos you currently working on right now if you don’t work and it have a lot of space Ex > 500 mb => delete them and clone them later there is no problem

Method 8 :

Optional :Delete your iPhone’s backup data. it can be over 3 GB wasted on that some people need them and the other don’t if you feel they are not necessary Go ahead and delete them 😁

Method 9 :

Empty your trash !

Don’t waste all of your effort and this trash is still in your trash 😅

Method 10:

You get different attachments via email — PDFs, Word Documents, images, etc. Sometimes we all make a mistake of double-clicking the file. When you do that, the file saves itself to your Mail Downloads folder. Double click enough files and that folder can blow up like a balloon. That’s why you need to remove old Mail Downloads. How to do that? How to clean my Mac? The easiest way is to use Spotlight. Press Command+Space to make the search field appear and type Mail Downloads. In the Folders section, you’ll see the Mail Downloads folder. Once you get to the folder, you can select the files and delete them. Make sure to check and empty it every year or so.

At the end I wish that your macs got better and faster ! if you liked this article => click on that little button with clap icon ! 🤓
