Good points. And the more direct “choose your body type” option is a good one. But to be fair, Proper Cloth does allow one to input their measurements — sleeve length, etc — directly. They ask about race (which they call ethnicity) in ADDITION to your measurements. What they’re claiming is that even AFTER you account for the usual measurements, one’s race/ethnicity supplies useful info about body shape — about those subtle tweaks needed to make a shirt fit really well.
