Ugh, I too rolled my eyes so hard at the original NYT piece. Thanks for putting the focus here on the HDFC rules, which are the real systemic problem. I suppose, though, that another reason articles like this (looking at you, entire NYT Real Estate section) draw so much ire is the coded language used to describe wealth and privilege. Her dad agrees to “help her” with a down payment. While I think most people will know what that means, it’s a frustratingly indirect way to describe a very large cash gift. I wish the writer and/or subject of this piece was more straightforward about how that kind of “help” impacts who gets to live where.
