The making of a perfect Superbowl commercial
The first ad is the Doritos “Cowboy Kid” commercial that was aired during the 2014 Superbowl. Go hawks!!

The ad features a older brother who tries to beat his little brother to the bag of Doritos their mom brought home from the grocery store. Then the older brother is chased down by the little brother riding his dog like a horse and beats him to the Doritos. The target audience for this ad would be families that have little boys, dog lovers, Dorito lovers or anyone that likes to laugh. The tone is obviously funny since the boy is riding his dog like a horse because it is that big. The ad isn’t really telling a story since it is only 30 seconds long but it does have a rising action, climax and falling action. The rising action is when the older brother teases his little brother by tipping his hat and then that leads into the climax. The climax is when the little brother is riding the dog and ropes in the Doritos and he has a look of defeat. The resolution is the little brother tying his brother up with rope at the end and showing off his victory of getting the Doritos.
The next one is everyone's favorite Superbowl ad, “Viva Young” by Taco Bell that aired during the 2013 Superbowl.

This commercial is a bunch of old people doing absurdly youthful things after they “went to bed” at their retirement home. Dancing, trespassing, fireworks, tattoos, nipple flashing, toilet-stall sex — it’s all in there. Eventually, the old folks end up at Taco Bell for their late night munchies before returning to the nursing home as the sun comes up.The tone of the ad is hilarious and I think any audience would be laughing after watching it. Its also greatly executed by Taco Bell. They aren’t obnoxiously advertising their product throughout the commercial and subtly do at the end. The song they use is also catchy. The story behind the commercial is these old people are reliving their glory days as teenagers (lets face it..the things they do are actually things we’ve done in college). The ad starts off with the exposition being that you see one of the characters who is older and in a retirement home. The rising action is then all the old folks sneaking out and getting into trouble all night long. Finally, the climax happens where you see them at Taco Bell all tired from the night and a cop shows up but just drives by and doesn’t bust them like they would if they were younger people.
Comparing the two ads, I would have to say that the Taco Bell ad is the stronger one. It is creative, humorous and targets all ages of audiences. This ad was extremely successful for Taco Bell and I’m sure it has gotten millions of shares on Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, the Doritos ad is funny but old people getting tatted and making out in a club just can’t be beat.
