Media Analysis Reflection
- Of everything that we studied this semester, what thing or things stand(s) out to you most? What are your big “takeaways” from Media Analysis? Why?
What stood out most to me in Media Analysis was noticing how the media can easily unite or break away people. Especially after looking at how the media portrays certain demographics or even how the news distorts stories with bias, it’s amazing to me that I’ve never truly acknowledged it. I think this is the most important because know I can actually watch the media and know that it is okay to be skeptical about what you are watching.
- To my knowledge, the only schools in the area that offer Media Analysis are Prospect and Stevenson. Do you think other schools should adopt the course? Why or why not?
I think that other schools should definitely consider Media Analysis as an English course because it opens people eyes and their perspectives. If anything, I think schools should have this course earlier in the students high school career because it allows people to really be more aware of what is actually going on in the world and how they are also perceived. I think it’s important that other school adopt this program in different areas because if anything other demographics will benefit from these lessons and how it impacts their world.
2. Speak to your preconceived notions of Media Analysis before taking the class, and how the class compared to those notions.
When I originally signed up for Media, I was told that it’s a fun class because all you do is watch movies. But in my opinion, I think it really goes beyond that because know I really understand “so what” and how different biases can impact everything. It showed me that people usually just absorb stories from the media without actually being engaged.
3. What aspect of Media Analysis did you most enjoy? Why?
The aspect I enjoyed most out of Media was probably the advertisement unit because I’ve always been exposed to advertisements. It was the most enjoyable because I know knew that there are different ways to lure in customers and that there is a better way to generate profits.
4. What skills have improved as a result of your time in this course? What do you think helped contribute to your development of those skills?
My skills that have improved the most is probably answering “the big so what.” In previous years, I only vaguely responded, but know I truly understand that I should “dig” for importance of the impact and why it affects the outside world.
