— Introduction to Operating System

To discuss a specific operating system, we must first have a basic understanding of it. An operating system is a type of software that manages computer programs, and hardware as well as provides a running ground for application software. They were first developed in the late 1950s. It is the very basis of a computer system and helps the users to communicate with the computer without knowing its language. It’s not possible for the user to use computers or even mobile devices without the presence of an operating system.

- Functions of operating systems

The operating system acts as the communication bridge between the user and computer hardware. Some of its main functions are as follows:

· Security: The operating system is responsible for the protection of user data and preventing unlicensed access to programs.

· Coordination: It coordinates and allocates different resources to the various users of computer systems.

· Memory management: It manages the memory of the computer system. Before the execution of a program, it must first be loaded into the main memory. This is handled by the Operating system.

· Device Management: One of the major functions of an operating system is that it manages devices by keeping a record of programs for different devices, and designates each program to run for a particular timeframe.

-Types of Operating Systems

There are various types of operating systems, a few of which are as follows:

· Batch operating systems: This does not interact with computers directly and it deals computer processes that require a lot of time.

· Network operating system: A network operating system is a particular operating system for a network device such as a router, firewall, etc.

· Multiple network operating system: It is a computer system that allows more than one user to access system resources at the same time.

· Real-time operating system: It is responsible for real-time procedures like processing data within a specified time limit.

· Embedded operating system: It is for embedded computer systems. They are designed in a way to improve functionality for required tasks.

· Library operating system: It provides essential functions of an operating system in the form of libraries and configuration codes.

· Mobile operating system: A mobile operating system allows smartphones, tablets, PCs, and other such devices to run applications and various programs smoothly. Some of its examples are Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Unix, etc.

The topic in the discussion today belongs to the last category.

— Introduction to iPhone Operating System

“ iOS is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for mobile devices designed by Apple.”

History of iOS

iOS belongs to the category of mobile operating systems. The operating system was revealed in January of 2007 at the Macworld Conference and Expo and released later that year.

iPhone OS-1

Before we dive into the features and advantages of iOS over other operating systems, let us first discuss the various versions of this operating system that have been designed in the past decade or so.

— Versions of iOS

Since the release of the first iOS in 2007, new versions have been released over time almost every year along with new device models. With this mechanism, bugs and errors are repeatedly fixed and with every new release, older versions turn obsolete. A total of 16 have been released so far.

iPhone OS 1 (oldest version)

Release: July 15, 2008

This is the oldest version of iPhone OS to be released on first-generation iPhones. It has now become obsolete but its features are to be discussed.

Its basic features included iPod(creating playlists, their organization with respect to artists, albums, genres, etc.), Phone, Text, Photos, Mail, Maps, Weather, etc. Some unique features included EDGE and WiFi, an Apple-integrated YouTube video player, Safari (web browser), and Custom ringtones.

— Advantages of Apple iOS Operating System

Now that we have discussed its unique features, we shall discuss some practical advantages of the iPhone Operating System.

  • Easy to use
The iOS operating system is designed to be easy to use even if you are not tech-savvy. The user interface is simple and there aren’t many options to choose from, making it easy to find what you’re looking for and start using your device. With so many options available, you should be able to find something that meets your needs.
  • Best for App Developers

If you are looking to develop apps, iOS is one of the best platforms to work with. The App Store is full of high-quality apps that have been developed specifically for iOS devices. This means you can be sure that your apps will be harmonious with the latest iPhones and iPads.

  • Gaming Experience

Apple Arcade is a game subscription service that gives you access to over 100 games without in-app purchases or ads. This makes it the best place for gamers who want to enjoy a great gaming experience without any distractions. Apple Arcade games are also designed to work with Apple’s new MFi controllers, meaning you can get the best gaming experience on your iPhone or iPad.

  • Power efficiency

iOS is very power-efficient in running applications. With proper care, battery life can be maintained for a very long time.

  • Graphics

One of my personal favorites among iOS features is the high-quality graphics and crisp imagery.

  • Smooth Running

iPhones are generally preferred over androids due to their smooth operation and backup features.

— Disadvantages of Apple iOS Operating System

There is a downside to everything in life so aside from the numerous advantages, there are some cons as well:

  • Flexibility

The iOS system lacks flexibility. It only caters well to other Apple device users, unlike Android.

  • High Price Point

While androids are more cost-friendly, iOS devices are heavy on the pocket and their repair costs are very pricy.

  • Limited Storage

iOS devices have increased storage but for a higher price point. The storage space of a given device is not customizable.

  • Battery life
While most users don’t have issues with the battery life, more than a few have complained that with time, the battery efficiency of older models seems to die down.

— Conclusion

Both Android and iOS provide a user-friendly interface with unique features and both have shortcomings of their own. To conclude, it really is up to the preference of the user and what he/she finds easier to use.
