What should 20-year-olds be doing? — Counterpoint What should 50-year-olds be doing?!
Since obviously I am not anywhere near 20, my kids being 28 and 32, I cannot give advice on what 20-year-olds should be doing. My kids hate advice anyway! I LOVE to give advice, LOVE it! I used to tell them, “you don’t have to take it, but you’re going to hear it.” But this isn’t about advice, it’s about being over 50.
Last Thursday I made a new acquaintance in Pilates (I talk about Pilates a lot somehow) and walked out of the studio with her, learning that she has a 20-year-old, a 16-year-old and a 4-year-old! So I told her I had 1 and 4-year-old grandsons, whereupon she stopped in her tracks. She then turned to look at me, exclaiming, “oh my goodness, and you’re still exercising, good for you!” As opposed to…playing shuffleboard, getting my walker out, buying support hose and hearing aids? I had to laugh, had to. She obviously had one notion of what a grandma should look like, and I guess I wasn’t that picture.
“I’m (over) 50, but I still feel like I’m 30…until I hang around with 30-year-olds…then I’m like, nope never mind I’m(over) 50!” That’s ok, not trying to be 30 again — besides, at 30 I was 40 pounds pregnant with my son.
So…my easy answer to “what should over 50-year-olds be doing?” is…wait for it…WHATEVER THE *!+# THEY WANT TO!! What is stopping us from doing anything we want?! Ourselves! Seems to me I’ve come to that conclusion before.
