As an Afro-Mexican or Afro-Latino, the concept of my identity is often not widely understood or accepted, both within the Mexican community and beyond. In the media, there is little representation of people who look like me and share my cultural heritage. This lack of visibility can make it difficult for us to find role models and inspiration, and it can also contribute to a sense of isolation and disconnection.

One of the challenges we face is that the history and contributions of Afro-Latinx people are often overlooked or erased. In Mexico, for example, the narrative of our national identity is often presented as a homogenous blend of indigenous and European cultures, with little recognition of the African influences that have shaped our country and our people. As a result, many Afro-Mexicans struggle to find a sense of belonging and connection to our own culture and history.

The lack of recognition and representation also extends beyond our own communities. In the rest of the world, the term “Afro-Latino” is often not widely understood or accepted, and many people do not realize that there is a significant black population in Latin America. This lack of awareness and understanding can make it difficult for us to connect with others and to feel seen and valued as part of the global community.

It is important for us to recognize and celebrate the diversity of our communities and to give visibility to the experiences and contributions of Afro-Latinx people. By sharing our stories and lifting up our voices, we can help to create a more inclusive and representative society that recognizes and values the richness of our cultural heritage.
