How much fun can you mix into work?
This is literally a question I’m asking. I don’t have an answer to it. Not yet anyway.
I’ve always considered myself somebody who thinks you should focus on your work, there is no time for messing around. If I find myself distracted I hate it. You work hard, and then have fun later.
Recently I’ve been thinking that it might make sense to lighten up my work and have a bit more fun.

One day last week whilst I was working I had Netflix on for an hour. More specifically, a recorded Jimmy Carr gig. I did make me laugh a lot. This was my attempt at dipping my toe in the water to see if having fun at work could help me.
At this point I should probably say I work from home on my own. I guess having lots of laughs at work in a larger working environment is a whole different kettle of fish.
Admittedly, I got somewhat distracted a few times having Jimmy Carr on in the background whilst I worked. But I felt good, laughing out loud always makes you feel good!
Today I tried something slightly different for a bit of fun. With the UK being hit (as I type this) by Storm Doris I thought a silly poem to start people’s days off would be good. Plus it would provide me with a laugh!
I posted it on my Tumblr, here is a screenshot to saving you time heading over there.

It did make me feel good writing it. The aim was for it to start serious, but then have a stupid line to finish that people probably aren’t expecting. I genuinely found it good fun to start my day of doing it!
Which has resulted in me cementing my plan on trying to have a bit more fun with work and be a bit more light-hearted. The risk is that it affects my quality of work, reduces productivity and causes a hit to profits. The potential benefits are that I’m happier at work, the day goes by quicker, and the upswing in my mood actually increases the quality of work.
Whatever the outcome, I feel it’s worth trying for a few weeks. Let’s try it.
