Ha, Rob — yeah, please don’t call me out as a newbie! I want people to assume I know what I’m doing and that could blow my cover! LOL. But, in all seriousness, I don’t think that it’s wise to force interaction, especially in groups that, as you said, shy or socially awkward. Some people might prefer to come and not be bothered and that’s great with them. But, for the more socially conscious, leaders in the group- making it a point to come and say hi to any newcomers could be an easy and good place to start. From there, if you get the sense that that person is interested in meeting people, maybe make an introduction. “Hey _____, this is _____. (S)he just joined and is also interested in <insert language/type of tech/etc that person is interesting in here>.
