Road trip to Germany, Austria and Italy in 3 days
Part 2
This is the continuation of Part I from our trip
After Venice, we embarked on our next journey, back to Germany (Deutschland), this time in the magical town of Berchtesgaden.
Luckily, we spent a few days at my boyfriend’s parents house who live in Schönau am Königssee, well known for the name of King’s Lake, one of the world’s most beautiful spots.
First we enjoyed a delicious Bavarian breakfast and then we headed
for some action!

We decided to go ride the summer alpine coasters (Sommerrodelbahn).
We started with the small one to warm-up at Hochlenzer in Obersalzberg and then the real deal at Hallein, which is the longest summer alpine coaster in Salzburg.

Then we enjoyed a beautiful view at Roßfeld, which has been used as backdrop for many films. Its scenery was used for the closing scenes of the famous movie The Sound of Music and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

We took the ski-lift located at the same spot as the big summer alpine coaster and enjoyed a big meal on the Zinkenstüberl restaurant on top of the mountain.

To finalize our day of action we headed to the Hellbrunn palace and the trick fountains, which is plenty of fun for all ages, especially in a sunny day.

The next day we headed to Königssee (King’s Lake), which is a few minutes walk from Chris’ parents house. King’s Lake is known for being the cleanest lake in all Germany, it has also been in amazingplacesonearth.com.

We finished the day with a nice Afrikaans dinner and music by a family friend Warren at Seeklause by the Hinterssee lake. This night Anna and I dared to eat more than just beef, chicken or pork. We tried Zebra, Crocodile, Springbok and some others exotic animals.

In our last day in Berchtesgaden we decided to try the local Grassl’s Schnapps (shots), the distillery is been open since 1602 and it is the oldest in Germany, we also got some nice souvenirs there. Yes! you can have shots early in the morning here☺

To finalize our day, we then headed to world’s largest ice cave located in Austria and then we visited the beautiful city of Salzburg, well known for Mozart and the opera house.

Salzburg City
Salzburg’s “Old Town” (Altstadt) is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg was also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The city was the setting for parts of the musical play and film The Sound of Music.

The next day, on our way back to Munich we visited one other palace of King Ludwig in Chiemsee. There are two main islands in this lake the
Herrenchiemsee (Gentlemen’s Island), which is the biggest one of the two and where the palace is located and the and Fraueninsel (Ladie’s Island). We visited the Herrenchiemsee.
Royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee (New Palace). Also called the “Bavarian Versailles” was modelled on Versailles since King Ludwig had a great admiration for King Louis XIV of France. The palace was never to be an exact replica of the Versailles, and in several places it even surpasses the French Royal palace.
Ludwig only got to appreciate this palace for a few days, before his death
the year after, the castle remained unfinished ☹.

Unfortunately Chris hurt his leg and could not come with us to walk around Munich in Angelo and Ana’s last day but we got to see the main parts of Munich in half a day. We started at Marienplatz, we got to see the Rathaus-Glockenspiel then we walked towards Munich Residenz and on our way we realized there was the Hamburger fish markt where we got to enjoy some nice Nordsee (North Sea) music and fresh seafood. We were pretty lucky because it is only open a few days in Summer time. Afterwards, we headed to the Hofgarten in Odeonsplatzt and ended up in the the Englischer Garten, which is one of the world’s largest urban public parks and even larger than New York’s Central Park. We enjoyed some ice cream and got to see the small Japanese tea house and The Monopteros, were surprisingly there were some people dancing salsa, the view there is great since it’s in a small hill. We also saw some nudists of all ages laying on the grass, enjoying the sun as is usually done in a sunny summer day in Munich. Living in Munich I am not shocked at it anymore, but it did caught my friends by surprise, hehe.

After Chris got to rest his leg we headed to the Therme Erding, which is the largest thermal bath complex in Europe. We enjoyed the indoor cool and crazy water slides and then relaxed in the sauna paradise filled with palm trees, pool bar, restaurants and outside and indoor pools, some with mineral water.
The next day Angelo and Ana departed and went back to NYC. We enjoyed their company and was a pleasure to share our crazy adventures together ☺.
Bis bald, see you soon, hasta pronto amigos!
