2022 Monster Champions Development Roadmap
Monster Medium #6 | Last Updated: June 7th, 2022
The last few months in crypto have been the perfect stress test. Anyone who’s been in crypto for longer than a few months is no stranger to volatility — we’ve seen the ups and downs of the market (and there have been many), and have persisted through it all. We’re all still here, fighting for the future, and being a part of something much bigger than ourselves. But we can’t control the market, and we can’t let it control us, either.
So what do you do when a bear market hits, and you’re in the early stages of a project?
The answer: Build and adapt.
In the last few months, we’ve been through a lot of changes. We’ve made valuable hires, expanded our project’s scope, and cultivated lasting friendships with leaders from other projects. We’re excited about what we’re building — both inside and out.
But that doesn’t mean we’re without our blemishes. As we began putting Monster Champions together, we realized that we wanted much more for our game than the v1.0 design we planned to launch in Q1. The roadmap looked good, and the functionality was achievable. What we didn’t properly consider, however, was the visuals we would need to get there. We decided v1.0 required stronger visual effects, and high-quality UI. Anything less would be a disservice to our artists, and the incredible Monster designs that they’ve put together.
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve since brought on both a UI artist and a VFX team to help us realize our vision of making Monster Champions an elite gameplay experience. They’ve been putting forth some amazing work, and we can’t wait to see how far we can go together. Below is a snippet of our Monster inventory, complete with all the details you could possibly want to know about your beloved NFT.
The other bottleneck on our timeline was a lack of developer support. Our development team was strong, but too heavily concentrated towards smart contract work. To achieve the true levels of depth and complexity we’ve been designing for Monster Champions, we brought on 2 more full-stack developers to be focused solely on backend & game development, and moved a number of our previous developers into a smart contract-only role. Creating more siloed positions has significantly improved our workflow, and broadened our horizons for what we can build for our game.
Lastly, and perhaps the most significant: our roadmap needed to be better equipped for a bear market. In a bear, people spend less and extract more. Simply being a web3 game isn’t going to cut it — if you want retention, you need substance. When the market took a turn, we took a step back and evaluated our design as a whole. To thrive in this market, we needed to be better. We adjusted our release schedule to follow phases instead of bulk releases, added depth and complexity to Monster skills, and forked our main game loop into 2 distinct modes. We have our sights set on delivering value early, and providing our community with something truly fun.
Here’s an ordered list of the things we have planned:
Q2 2022- Own Assets, Collect Runes
Admire your Monsters and Champions on the Dashboard
The MC dashboard will be your “home” outside of the game, where you can view all of your Monster Champions NFTs and game assets from any device. It allows you to create an account and link it to multiple wallets, unifying all your holdings in one convenient location. This dashboard will be expanded to link to the marketplace, as well as the gamut of DeFi options we’ll be offering for our tokens.
Send teams on Expeditions to discover Runes
Expeditions will allow the player to put together a team consisting of 4 Monsters and 1 Champion, then send them on a journey to hunt for Runes. The player can claim their rewards at any time, but the quality of the Rune will increase gradually (until claimed) based on both the rarity of the participating Monsters and the elapsed duration of the Expedition. Runes will be viewable in the web dashboard, and will be equippable by your Monsters in the Unity launch.
Runes are essential for designing your team’s strategy, letting you structure your Monster however you want. No single factor in the game can influence your Monster’s stats more than a Rune. Use them to build tanks, healers, glass cannons and more — the choice is totally up to you.
Q3 2022: Season 1, Alpha Game Launch
Overcome waves of enemies and defeat the boss in Dungeon Mode
Official launch of our battle engine, with full Monster skills and speed-based turn mechanics. Complete Dungeon quests to earn earn Gold and Runes, and maybe a Monster Egg if you’re lucky!
30% of weekly $CENT will be distributed among each week’s participants, along with extra Monster Eggs and Monster Snacks to top placers. Dungeons are the foundational game loop for Monster Champions, and are crucial to your team’s development.
Obtain $MON and $CENT
$MON will be airdropped initially, and afterwards can be purchased and/or deposited into the bank to earn your share of 45% of game CENT spend. $MON earns more the longer it is in the bank, but can be withdrawn at any time. Overall, 90% of all CENT spend will be cycled back to the community, placing us among the highest recirculation rates in the web3 gaming space.
There will be 2 liquidity pools: $MON + $ETH, and $CENT + $USDC. Your LP tokens can be staked 1–12 months, and will earn $MON rewards based on amount & duration staked.
Bank and LP token leaderboards will also award game items, such as Rare Eggs, Monster Cores, and limited cosmetics.
Titan of the week
Face off against a different formidable foe every week, on a rotating schedule. Each Monster receives 1 free entry per week. The weekly Titan leaderboard will include a point system based on your damage dealt to the titan, and will pay rewards in the form of Monster Cores, upgrade materials, and special Runes, as well as 15% of $CENT spent each week. The Titan changes weekly, so adjust your team accordingly!
Put some Pep in your step
Use Pep to run dungeons on repeat, and accelerate regeneration with Monster Snacks and Monster Dens. The pep system will function like “energy” in any other game, and is the only resource required to run a dungeon. Players will receive pep passively by default, but can accelerate the process by refilling a Monster’s pep manually with Monster Snacks. The pep system is essential for allowing continued gameplay, and is a massive step towards having a complete ecosystem.
Players will have the ability to run the same dungeon repeatedly in a hands-off mode that doesn’t require constant interaction. This is great for automating the repetitive parts of the game, and allows the player to focus more on their team design and resource allocation. Through this, players will be able to “set and forget”, by queueing an entire series of dungeon runs that will execute automatically whether the game is open or not.
Create cores, upgrade and evolve Monsters
This includes bridge functionality for Monster NFTs, which allows them to be moved off-chain to become regular game data. Extract Monsters for Duplicores or Omnicore Shards, use Omnicore shards to create Omnicores, and fuse Monsters of the same species to create an Evolution.
Without this bridge, there is no proper way to burn Monsters into each other — particularly at the lower rarities. Since all Genesis Monsters are NFTs, there is a level of complexity to combining/destroying them.
This bridging functionality will be rolled out in the following logical phases, with each requiring slightly more complex mechanics than its predecessor:
1. Burn a Monster to create Duplicores or Omnicore Shards
2. Fuse Omnicore shards together to create an Omnicore
3. Equip Monsters with Duplicores/Omnicores
4. Access to low-rarity Eggs, so players can begin collecting off-chain fodder
5. Combine several Monsters of the same Elemental Affinity Level to raise the Elemental Affinity Level and max level of the base Monster
6. Combine 2 Monsters of the same species to create an Evolution
Q4 2022: Season 2, Game Expansion
Face off against other players in the PvP arena
Create battles against friends & opponents, put your team to the test. Try out new builds. Soft launch with “Skirmish” mode, followed by ranked competitive play. Ranked PvP will pay out leaderboard rewards to the top finishers each week, and will expand with the player base to include multiple tiers as the meta develops.
Join a guild
Join a guild and gain merit. Share off-chain resources, and fight in highly competitive tournaments. Work together with your guild to earn reputation points and secure special rewards based on your ranking.
Challenge other guilds
Ranked, competitive GvG. Compete against other guilds in to fight for merit on the competitive leaderboard. Gain points based on damage dealt, number of wins attacking, and number of wins defending. Compete with other guilds to be the highest performer of the season, and earn massive rewards.
Download from Google Play, and Apple App Store
Prior to this, the game will be playable on mobile through the browser. Now the game can be downloaded, which will allow expansion into traditional markets.
Official launch of the Key System
Players can bridge off-chain resources onto the blockchain as Polygon-based NFTs. This is the most important step in onboarding regular players into our ecosystem, and creating a smooth on-ramp for new entrants to the NFT space. Keys will be a commonly-distributed resource across all of our leaderboards, and will be a great way to reserve earning potential for those who are active in our ecosystem.
Expansion of VFX library, more diverse skill animations, more complex animations
VFX are one of the most costly components of game development — they consume a lot of time, effort, and money. By this point in our timeline, we expect to have raised enough capital to significantly improve our VFX department and roll out much more complex visuals for our Monsters. While this milestone is placed later in the list, it’s intended to begin development much earlier. The work towards this milestone will begin as soon as we complete our Series A round, which will be focused on bringing in more funding to secure longer runway for our existing team, as well as making a few key hires (marketing, VFX, SFX). In terms of gameplay, this will be one of our most beneficial expansions.
Power up Champions with skill books
Each Champion has 1 slot for a skill book, which will provide it with a unique power-up. Skill books will facilitate incorporation of partnership NFTs into the game, and will be launched in tandem with a number of collaborative cross-IP events that are already being planned.
New dungeons and gameplay
Introduction of new types of dungeons, with brand new loot and runes. Players can pick from multiple types of dungeons, the loot in which will be specialized to fit different playstyles.
Alongside this, we’re planning to launch special PvP metagames with modified rules, to encourage players to think outside the box and put together unique team combinations with less-common Monsters. These possibilities for these metagames are endless, including challenges such as:
- Monotype (your team can only contain 1 element)
- Rare-Only (all Epic and Legendary Monsters are banned)
- No Charge (Monsters can only use their Basic Skill and Passive Skills)
- Newcomer Cup (all Monsters must have a hatch date < 1 month ago)
We’re excited for what’s ahead. We also want to give a special shoutout to our community for being so awesome with us throughout this entire process. We’ve seen a lot of discourse in the NFT space around the market, yet our community has remained calm and friendly, and a safe space to hang out with other web3 folks. We love interacting with you guys every day, and we’re really looking forward to delivering on this updated roadmap. There’s an unbelievable amount of innovation packed into what we’re doing here, and it’s only the beginning, Champions!
