Focusing on meaningful outcomes and on development, OKRs helped us see mistakes as feedback for how we could improve and kept us moving forward.

Late last year, a number of departments in my group underwent massive change. We shifted the entire organization and re-defined many of their current roles.

I felt that, while they mostly were passionate and idealistic (a handful of them were new talent) about the change, they were going to burn out pretty soon with the shotgun approach they were using to get work done.

Most of the organization still adhered to ‘performance appraisals only when necessary’ — and that’s usually the one time of the year when HR starts handing…


Managers traditionally think they are supposed to tell people what to do, and that coaching is at odds with this belief.
