Vallejo Schools get a Boost in Technology with it’s first Coding Summer Camp
#CodeCamp is Back and offering Vallejo Youth a Chance at becoming Jr. Coders
Urban Tech Center or UTC Bay Area, as it’s known around middle schools throughout the city of Vallejo, CA and pretty much spreading throughout Northern California, is embarking on one of its largest #CodeCamps ever this summer. On June 12th UTC begins their 3 week #CodeCamp at Hogan Middle School during Vallejo’s summer break. The camp is part of the Vallejo City Unified School District’s Expanded Learning Summer Program, which promotes the inclusion of Technology and STEM related learning in its programs district wide. UTC has operated technology programs with Vallejo City Unified since 2016 and by 2018 hopes to be able to provide elementary and high school programs district wide at no cost. Currently VCUSD funds programming like UTC’s through state and federal grants.
With over 60+ applicants this summer, including new and returning students, #CodeCamp is a fun and challenging at the same time with breakout sessions in subjects like Game and Mobile Design, Web Development, using HTML5 and more. #CodeCamp brings technology learning with an emphasis on computer programming to the minds of Vallejo students by providing them a wide open opportunity to learn a valuable and demanding set of skills. Students leave #CodeCamp with a greater understanding of what they see on the web and on their devices as well as the ability to grasp concepts and logical thinking methods that will give them confidence and a feel of what it’s like to be a real Software Engineer solving today’s problems with code.
UTC is founded by local entrepreneur Executive Director La Shauna E. Nichols, a Vallejo native and present Software Engineer CEO at East Bay based NightVision Apps. A minority, a woman and an Engineer, Nichols credits her small town Vallejo in giving her the drive to bring these programs to the community. “The lack of technology and skill support in Vallejo is alarming. Our programs will help with this…”, says Nichols. And helping is what is primarily on UTC’s agenda. Their instructors are full time Engineers, Entrepreneurs and Software Application Professionals who thrive to give back through mentorship in the community.
UTC has begun fundraising to bring FREE Tech programs and workshops for all age groups to underserved communities all over the world starting with the Bay Area.
