I’m deleting Snapchat, and you should too

I disagree with your conclusion about an increasingly white future, but only because companies with a wide range of people have several major advantages and companies like SnapChat can’t compete in the long run.

That group is amazingly uniform.

We aren’t just talking about all of them being white, they are all youngish white men with marketroid faces. In the core group, they all have very similar facial structure. Barry and Tom look a little different, but check out the nose: they used to look like the others. Bobby is the only one with a different nose. And facial expression. He looks a little geeky, doesn’t look like he can pull off the matrketroid facial expression. My guess: he’s there because Evan needed a guy who knew some tech stuff, and the rest of his social circle were, shall we say, more into other things.

You’d see more diversity in most “OK, now just the boys” group pictures of a mono-racial family.

And the guys who diverge slightly from the look? Their pictures are smaller. In the first group, check out Bobby Murphy’s picture. His face doesn’t fill the frame.

It looks very much like the founder surrounded himself with people he felt comfortable with. He probably didn’t even realize how much they all looked alike.

Way to set up an echo chamber.

Some of the similarity is careful work by the photographer and graphic design team. I suspect they look a bit more different in person. That… is even more disturbing.

I don’t use SnapChat because I don’t trust anything to disappear off the Internet, and I’d rather delete things when it’s convenient for me. Not that I expect them to for-sure go away then either. If you send it, you have to assume it’s out there. And if it goes to or through somebody who you can’t trust (in terms of both good faith and technical skills) to secure it, it can turn up anywhere.
