The Underground.
Are you looking for something fun to do during the week or just a nice spot to enjoy a warm tasty cup of coffee? It’s often a place of comfort for many Western students. Well if so the Underground offers all of those things. When you first walk into the Underground can you can hear the coffee being poured and people talking among themselves it reminds at times of home. You can smell the coffee and sweet smell of the food that is to die for.
I personally like to come to the Underground to just sit and relax in one of the comfy couches, drink my cup of coffee after a long day or if I just need a place to be by myself. My favorite thing about sitting at the Underground though is the amazing view of Bellingham Bay. If you are wanting to treat yourself after you finished that big test that you’ve been studying for you should come to the Underground and try one of their amazing treats. Right when you come in you can smell the aroma of the food baking in the oven and at times the smell might even make your mouth water.
They Underground has many different activities happening during the week. I went on to the Associated Students of Western Washington’s Website and found out that on Monday’s they offer trivia, jazz jams and karaoke, Tuesday’s it’s open mic night,Concerts on Wednesday and on Thursday they have sponsored club nights. It’s always a lot of fun and it’s a great place to show your inner musical talents and here some local talent.
With the Underground being such a popular place it can get very busy and crowded during the day. Which can often be overwhelming to some people. Being a small place the seating is all very close to each other. Since there is limited seating I think that that’s a problem. With so many students doing their homework or enjoying their cup of coffee I think that there should be more seating for the students. It could draw students from doing their homework there like me personally.
In Place by Lynn A. Staeheli she talks about how place can be socially constructed over time. I think that it applies to the way we look at the Underground. All Western Students are at different spot in our lives, when we are freshmen we might look at the Underground as a place to hangout with our friends and drink coffee, But a Senior could look at the Underground as a place to do homework. On page 162 Staeheli quotes Doreen Massey who says “Which years of human activity construct the built and social forms that constitute the place.”
The Underground is a place that offers great coffee and entertainment , Not every place is perfect the Underground does have limited seating all of these things make up the way we view and look at the Underground.
