Diversity and Discrimination

1. How India had thrived with diversity of culture?

· Diversity has constituted the framework of Indian society

· India has thrived with diversity of culture and races through the principal of Secularism, Tolerance, and mutual respect

2. What are the problems faced due to diversity of culture?

The main reason/ problems faced due to diversity are Discrimination, Prejudice, Inequality and Stereotypes

3. Define Discrimination with example?

· Discrimination is practice of treating one person or group of people less fairly (badly) than other people/ groups.

· Discrimination refers to treating people differently based on caste, creed, color, language, gender etc.

· We discriminate when we don’t treat everyone equally.

Ex: Not all caste people can enter the Temple

Not all caste people take water from common wells

Low caste people should not talk/ get things from high caste people.

4. What is Prejudice? What it leads to?

· Prejudice means without no reason making hatred on particular group of people or things

· Prejudice is normally formed based on preconceived ( Ideas/ opinion formed before having the evidence of truth ) about someone/ something not based on actual experience

· Prejudice normally leads to discrimination

· Prejudice leads to conflicts between communities, disunity, racial arrogance and leads to hindrance in the development of country

Ex: for Prejudice are

1. Overweight children could not dance and they are always below average in sports

2. Brahmins alone are well versed at Carnatic music

5. Define Stereotype with example?

· A Stereotype is a fixed opinion of a person/ group of people which is not true.

· Stereotypes are created when judgements are made about people which is not true.

· Ex: Women only should do the household chores and Men should earn for their livelihood

6. What are the steps taken to avoid discrimination and inequality?

· Money lending reforms must be taken into consideration

· Improving the educational opportunities for women

· Worst aspects of caste system must be broken

· We must respect people and individuality and not judge them on basis of their economic background, race, religion or appearance

7. Write a short note on Social Inequality?

· Earlier, in ancient times, Hindu society was divided into four castes based on the work of the people

· Caste system leads to treatment of people in a highly unequal manner

· Caste system discriminated people based on which caste they are born and denied the opportunity to be educated and earn money

· Constitution of India abolished untouchability in the year 1980 and declared that all people are equal.

8. Write a short note on Economic Inequality?

· Based on the amount of money a individual have, they are treated as rich or poor

· Rich people enjoy all facilities such as Education, healthcare, Shopping in Malls, Restaurants, Hotels, Vacation in other countries and much more.

· Poor people have to face the discrimination in all areas of life

· Poor they are trying hard to meet their daily needs such as Food, Shelter and Clothing

9. What are the other types of Discrimination?

· Religious discrimination is common in all parts of the world

· They often clash with each other over their belief

· Gender discrimination is generally faced by women due to the unequal laws all over the world even in the developed countries

10. Give an example for breaking the Stereotypes?

· Stereotypes can be broken by developing a broad minded perception of people and situation around us.

· Ex: Paralympics is conducted for the differentially abled people

· The First Paralympics was hosted in London 1948.

11. Write a short note about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar?

· Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is a chief architect of Indian Constitution

· He was born in a low caste family and faced discrimination in all stages of his life.

· He became Lawyer, Economist and a Social reformer

· An ideal society must be based on Liberty, Equality and Fraternity

12. What are the steps taken towards the Equality?

· Preamble of Constitution ( Introductory part) uses the term “Fraternity” that is to treat all the citizens in spirit of brotherhood

· It envision a society must be free from discrimination, all citizens are equal

· The fundamental right in constitution is to safeguard people from discrimination and exploitation

· It also aims for promoting equality and diversity

· The right to vote is given to all citizens who are above 18 years of age without any discrimination

13. What was the racial discrimination followed in South Africa?

· Apartheid was a practice of racial discrimination in South Africa

· It was treating the black people inferior and they were not allowed to use public facilities and have right to vote

· This practice came to end by Nelson Mandela

· Due to his efforts, all the blacks were given full political rights including the right to vote in 1994.
