DIY Chihuly glass inspired ink coasters

Gorgeous right? Whether it’s a vital 8AM Monday hot coffee or an icy Friday night cocktail on the rocks, every drink needs a stage! What’s better than a beautifully handmade coaster? Try these babies out. They’re super easy to make and inspired by famed glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Here’s what you’ll need
You can find all of these items at your local craft or home improvement store.
- 50 isopropyl alcohol
- Standard white ceramic 4.25″ x 4.25′ tiles
- Alcohol ink in colors of your choice
- 1 paint brush
- Wax paper or protective table cloth
- Gloss enamel sealing spray
Step 1
Lay down wax paper or cloth to protect your crafting space. Remember — ink stains! In fact, you might want to make sure you’re not wearing anything you adore. If you’re anything like us, you might just spill.
Step 2
Grab your first tile and apply the isopropyl alcohol liberally. Go ahead and take your time. We’ll wait.
Step 3
Begin to drip alcohol ink onto the wet tile. Get creative! Think of it like tie-dying. Mix like colors or colors that work well together and let them bleed into one another. You can’t screw this part up. We promise.
Step 4
Allow the tile to air dry for at least 1–2 hours. If you’re looking for something to help pass the time, you can try your hand at those cocktails.
Step 5
Take your project outside, or to a well-ventilated area (the fumes can be a bit much), and seal your art work using the enamel spray. You’re ALMOST there!
Step 6
Allow the tile to air dry again for at least 2–3 hours. Come back and take a gajillion photos. After all, we want to see your finished coasters and everyone else will too!
*Not dishwasher safe. Just wipe down when you need to.
