Current treatment models all insist people with addictions have to hit bottom before they can be helped. But at the same time they also insist addictions are a disease. Way to often bottom is death. What other disease is treated this way? Do we push diabetic patients out of treatment if they don’t improve their diet? How about heart disease or cancers? Illness that is caused or worsened by the patients behavior is not an acceptable reason for the medical community to stop treatment and it should be no different for addiction treatment. When substance abuse intervention fails so many it can’t be the fault of the patients.
