In honor of his 81st Birthday, we discuss the great New York auteur Martin Scorsese, who is beyond reproach in the history of the cinematic arts. DaVinci, Michelangelo, … Scorsese. Of his twenty best films, which picture is his masterpiece?

This two part experience of fully engaging in a body of work that has been nothing short of a gift to audiences everywhere, was extremely personal to me. Martin Scorsese’s films helped shape me through my formative years as a writer, storyteller and lover of cinema. I hope you take a moment to appreciate the time and effort put into this writing. But most importantly, I hope it provokes your own mind into exciting thoughts and ideas. Read Below, see Part Two for the complete list and Enjoy!

Similarly to any ranking of a great artist with the caliber of Scorsese, all of these films are great. They can be impossible to rank but, it’s clear the level of immersive, personal, or passionate dedication he puts into specific pictures in his catalog. There are the experimental ones like Bringing Out the Dead (1999) or the personal investments like films such as Silence (2016) or Mean Streets (1973). Then the passion he puts into films like The Departed (2006) or Raging Bull (1980) puts them at a different status. Or he could be having the most fun with films like Casino (1995) or Cape Fear (1991). Either way all are great in their own right and in this piece, one of his all-time super fans will attempt a ranking of his twenty best films. It’s not exactly an easy task.

20. Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
