Once in a Lifetime — A Drabble

She almost didn’t dare touch it. For an outcast to handle something so fine was unthinkable. But as her fingers slid against the exquisite fabric, she knew she must steal it.

Wearing it that evening she was a vision to behold, dancing the night away in the silken embrace of her newfound glamour. Breathless, she sought privacy to regain her composure.

Dizziness dogged her, throat constricting. Stumbling beside a mirror, the scarf came loose, falling to the ground. Suddenly she could breathe, but her reflection revealed a haggard version of her former self.

Despairingly, she reached for the scarf again.
