Article Takeaways

Cleaner Smarter Spreadsheets Article: I didn’t know that you could make comments on a cell, similar to the revision tools available in Word. I think this will be a useful took when working in Excel, especially when working on longer projects like the Midterm or Final, because I will be able to make notes and go back to them when I need to.

Basic Steps in Working with Data: I found it interesting when this article noted that a data set might not be able to answer every interesting question on the datas topic. I think its important to recognize the limitations of some data, like the example of 3 year data not being able to help in understanding a historical trend.

NY State Criminal Justice Database | Arrests Among 16–17 Year Olds

I looked at the data for arrests among 16–17 year olds from 2013–2017. While there was an overall decreasing trend of arrests between 2013 and 2017 for both 16 and 17 year olds, the category of non violent felony did not consistently decrease year over year. For both ages, the non violent felony arrests showed an increase between 2013 and 2017, with inconsitencies within the in between years. The below charts demonstrate the trend in overall arrests for both ages as well as the total (for both ages).
