“Make music that you love”

I remember seeing an episode of Studio 1.0 with Scooter Braun as a guest and I had a few good memories about this event like the Bill Clinton’s imitation, the miraculous discovery of Justin Bieber, talking about Bieber’s misconduct at that time and Scooter deciding to let the rake hit Bieber on the face, couple Hi-5's with Emily Chang and the face he made in the pic above. But what hit me hard was when Scooter was asked how he keeps his Clients competitive in this changing times in the music industry and He then answers and at some point He says “Make Music that you love”.

Recently I started to relate this to the much imitation I see in the product ideas I hear today. Some budding entrepreneurs are no more trying to be who they are but are continually asking themselves “what do we build that a reputable investor will write a check for” Or “how do we look and act like the next Steve Jobs or Larry Page” or “What are the right words to say”. That’s why we hear pitches like “the Uber of this” or “the Airbnb of this”. Some of these budding entrepreneurs forget that the real successful companies were not imitators but where projects the founders loved and wanted to build. Also the fact remains that excellence in a field comes out of love for what you do and passion for what you do. My advice to every budding entrepreneurs out there is they should stay away from people and sources that keeps painting the picture that for an entrepreneur to be successful He has to be Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos or Larry Page or Mark Zuckerberg (in terms of wealth, business trajectory and so on) but instead should focus on working with friends and building products they love and would use because the next “Google” is next a search engine and the next Edison is not going to invent a fucking light bulb. Make music that you love.
