👑 Wrapped BTC (WBTC)
Firstly, “Wrapped BTC” or “WBTC” is an ERC-20 token used on the Ethereum network, allowing Bitcoin to be wrapped and traded on the Ethereum blockchain.
Since Ethereum supports smart contracts and Bitcoin is based on a different blockchain, direct transfers were challenging. However, WBTC enables the utilization of Bitcoin on the Ethereum network.
⭕ Creating WBTC is straightforward:
- Bitcoin holders deposit BTC through trusted centralized institutions partnered with WBTC.
- The centralized institution issues WBTC corresponding to the deposited BTC.
- This makes WBTC tradable and movable within the Ethereum network.
- Users wanting to use WBTC can return it to the centralized institution, withdrawing the corresponding BTC.
