Farmers’ Markets are a great place to go if you desire to achieve a healthy lifestyle. At farmers’ markets there is a sense of community, buyers connect their purchases with an experience and other community members, with their often being live entertainment and raffles for the people to enjoy.

According to Michigan State University, “The access to fresh local produce is becoming more desirable to many consumers because of the ability to meet the farmer who grew it.

Christopher Morris, a Morgantown resident enjoys coming to The Farmers’ Market because of the variety of foods available that are harvested seasonally and aren’t found elsewhere. Upon asking him where else he and his girlfriend sourced food from he said,

“We go back and forth between the Kroger and coming here, the problem with this being once a week is that sometimes you forget that it’s happening or you’re away on a Saturday, unfortunately because of that you can’t always get the stuff from here.”

Distributors at the Farmers’ Market farm their produce and products within a 50 mile radius of Morgantown, which allows for freshly harvested crops to be sold to the community.

“ The fact that we are certified naturally grown and we do use organic growing practices, that means that everything that’s on this table is grown with as healthy practices as you can have. I feel like that is important, and everything is grown 15 minutes from here so people can know where stuff is coming from,” says Mary Oldham, Co-Owner of __________ farms.

In Oldham’s opinion, buying products from the farmers market saves people money on their groceries because the products last longer in storage compared to products that are shipped across the country.

The Cultivating A Healthy Food System website lists 10 reasons why people should purchase foods from their local Farmers’ Market, among them is “Much food found in grocery stores is highly processed and grown using pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modification. Some of it has been irradiated, waxed, or gassed in transit. These practices may have negative effects on human health. In contrast, most food found at the farmers market is minimally processed, and many of our farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties.”

By shopping at the Farmers’ Market you are supporting family farms, protecting the environment, nourishing yourself, and connecting with your community.
