Dax Sheppard is my new hero. With over 10 years of sobriety, high levels of introspection, and killer comedic timing, he is in a unique position to engage celebrity guests in honest and somewhat taboo conversations. His favorite topics are the effects of childhood, dealing with insecurities, therapy, and sobriety. We suggest listening to the inaugural episode with wife Kristin Bell, which shows the couples ability to work through real life annoyance using therapy tools and ultimately display genuine affection for the other.

The Science of Happiness
“Research based tips for a meaningful life”
Running on average twenty minutes long, this podcast from the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley is part social experiment, part science class. The length of it makes it a quick and effective way to learn about research-based findings that will increase levels of happiness. This is an excellent listen for therapists wanting to add “tools” to your “kits” without having to comb through scientific articles (or Pinterest boards). We recommend this moving episode with children’s book author Yuyi Morales on the power of writing a “gratitude letter.”
“…teachings that blend Western Psychology and Eastern spiritual practices…”
Tara Brach’s podcast has become one of the more important voices in my life. Brach’s life work is a blend of spirituality, psychology, loving kindness, and humor (Brach spent ten years living in an ashram in India studying spirituality and meditation before pursuing her Ph.D. in clinical psychology) to form consistent, wise, and comforting talks. They will remind you why life is good. Brach’s message is consistent, so all episodes are excellent, but we recommend starting with this one on ways to reduce suffering.

The Trauma Therapist Podcast
“…interviews about what it means to sit with those who have been impacted by trauma.”
This podcast, hosted by Guy McPherson, brings in a wide array of trauma therapists, from Bessel Van Der Kolk to Gabor Mate (and many in between) to share about their work. McPherson is a gentle guide with a ritualized interview style that makes the myriad types of trauma therapy easy to get to know. His format is always to elicit from his guests an inspirational quote, a seminal mistake they made early on, advice for new therapists and recommended reading. Our personal favorite is this talk with Internal Family Systems founder Richard Schwartz.

Allison Puryear is an LCSW with experience and passion for helping therapists build thriving private practices and overcome fears related to owning and marketing a business. Her podcast feels like a (free!) consultation session, featuring a guest with a dilemma related to private practice. We may be biased but our favorite episode is with Motivo founder Rachel McCrickard on the struggle to find quality and effective supervision.
Katie Woodruff has a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in trauma-informed care. She has worked in community mental health, female prison, and in private practice. A Louisiana native and Tennessee transplant, she is currently living in post graduate/pre-licensure purgatory and understands the need for Motive all too well. She enjoys unpredictable weather, her misunderstood pit bull and most of all, a good sense of humor.
