You cannot really think “Birth” failed (flopped is an overstatement) because Parker has a white wife? It’s the woman he and his co-writer drunk-raped, sent her on a downward life spiral aided by Penn State Jock Justice, that is the off-camera narrative that killed the film with the vast majority of potential moviegoers. Every “niche” audience has its idiosyncracies. Black viewers didn’t make “12 Years a Slave” a hit. Women in general, across color lines, rejected Parker’s picture — at least in part because he seems an unrepentant entitled creep who handed a screenwriting credit to the guy he enabled in that rape. The mediocre actor part played a role, too.
