It’s been a while since manhwa became popular, but the fandom’s excitement hasn’t fizzled. There are incredible fantasy manhwa series. From magic to medieval settings to tons of romance, the fantasy manhwa genre is truly thriving.

15 Orange Marmalade (2011–2013)

Written & illustrated by Seok-woo

Orange Marmalade, written and illustrated by Seok-woo, is set in a world where humans and vampires coexist but have a terrible relationship. While humans don’t fear these bloodsucking monsters, they discriminate against them. This doesn’t stop Baek Ma-ri, a vampire girl, from falling in love with a human, Jung Jae-min.

Serialized on Naver Webtoon, Orange Marmalade has a simple premise, but romance fans will fall for it immediately. The star-crossed lovers’ trope is everyone’s guilty pleasure. Since the manhwa ended, Orange Marmalade was also adapted into a TV series.

14 Noblesse (2007–2019)

Written by Son Je-ho & illustrated by Lee Kwangsu

One of the most popular early manhwa in existence, Noblesse tells the story of Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, aka Rai, who wakes up after an 820-years-long sleep. The series follows him as he gets accustomed to the modern world and enrolls in high school with his servant, Frankenstein.

Noblesse rewrote Frankenstein’s tale in a delightful manner, which explains its popularity. This series was in publication for 12 years, but fans agree every moment of waiting was worth it. In 2020, its anime adaptation made it to Crunchyroll.

13 Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady With The Lamp (2017–2021)

After Dr. Song, a talented surgeon, dies, she awakens as the person in her previous life, the wicked Princess Elise. Now with the knowledge of an experienced doctor, Elise gets a second chance to do things right instead of hurting her own people.

Everyone likes a redemption story, and Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady With The Lamp is a great one. This manhwa is both a fantasy and an isekai manhwa, as it deals with magic and science while also following a main character in a different world than theirs.

12 This Girl Is A Little Wild (2018–2019)

Written by 303 Planet & illustrated by Coyo

After Sir Roel defeats the Demon King, the villain decides to use his last breath to turn Sir Roel into a woman. Unbeknownst to him, Sir Roel was a woman all along, and now she has swapped bodies with an elegant, rich woman, Sila Epheria. Now, both women must deal with the consequences of this.

Body-swapping is a fan-favorite trope in manga because it allows for plenty of romance and comedy. This Girl is a Little Wild, also known as The Sword and the Dress, sees a beautiful romance develop, but it’s also incredibly funny. Fans also love it for its complex characters.

11 The Abandoned Empress (2017–2023)

Just as Aristia was supposed to take over the Castina Empire, she is betrayed by the emperor with the appearance of a new woman. Right before her timely death, however, she is sent back seven years in the past before everything falls apart. Now, she’s in a race against time to change her fate.

Written by Yuna and illustrated by iNA, The Abandoned Empress charmed readers from the very first moment since it deals with reincarnation, a beloved trope, combined with romance.After six years, the series ended recently, which divided the fandom’s opinions. 10 The Duchess With An Empty Soul (2019-Present)

Right after discovering her fiance is cheating on her with her own cousin, Yvona Bote dies and wakes up a year in the past. Deciding to change her own fate, she allies with the Duke of Azentine. Even though Yvona is convinced love is a lie, destiny has other plans for her.

The Duchess with an Empty Soul, written by Han Jin-Seo and illustrated by Jin Se-Ha, is a classic love story where the bitter Yvona falls for the coldhearted Duke during their twisted alliance. Unfortunately, this series is currently on a hiatus, but fans are hopeful it will return soon.

9 The Justice Of Villainous Woman (2018–2020)

Written by Sola & illustrated by Min and Yuns

Before Hwayoung was reincarnated into an unfamiliar world, she fell into the Han River after losing her boyfriend to her so-called best friend and died. Now, as Satiana Altisee Kaylon, the only daughter of House Kaylon and villainess, she must do everything she can to save her family from an empire full of antagonists, steal the royal seat from the crown prince, and become empress.

The Justice of a Villainous Woman — written by Sola and illustrated by Min (REDICE) and Yuns — is both a fantasy manhwa and an incredible isekai. Those who like that combination are sure to enjoy it.

8 Tomb Raider King (2019–2023)

When God’s Tombs — which contain ancient and rare artifacts within them — begin to appear around the world, the Tomb Raider King begins looting them. Many others follow his steps, racing to get to the artifacts first since they have the power to give them legendary powers.

Tomb Raider King — written by Yoonz and illustrated by 3B2S and Redice Studio — ended recently, so readers won’t have to worry about any hiatuses. The main series has around 400 chapters, and there are a series of side stories in publication at the moment, so there’s plenty of Tomb Raider King to enjoy.

7 Her Shim-Cheong (2017–2019)

Written by Seri & illustrated by Bi-wan

Her Shim-Cheong centers on two women who form a deep connection after their fates intertwine: Shim-Cheong, a beggar who supports her blind father, and a woman who is to be sold to a man. After Shim-Cheong saves the bride-to-be from a river, the two form a relationship of trust as well as romance. However, many don’t want to see them happy, especially because they come from two vastly different backgrounds.

Written by Seri and illustrated by Bi-wan, Her Shim-Cheong is based on an old Korean fairytale, The Tale of Sim Chong. Those who enjoy historical romances with a tinge of fantasy are recommended this story, especially if they also enjoy LGBTQ+ love.

6 Black Haze (2012–2017)

Written & illustrated by Yong Yong

Black Haze centers on a young man named Rood Chrishi, known widely as the Black Magician. He is sent to a famed school of sorcery to protect Dio Varus, the son of Duke Dayner Artian, as well as to figure out why everyone calls his son a monster. While undercover, Rood also discovers there is more occurring at the school than it appears.

This manhwa was written and illustrated by Yong Yong. Although it was highly acclaimed during its publication, it was unfortunately discontinued before it could finish. However, some fans still have hope that it will return. Despite that, it is still a great fantasy manhwa to read.

5 Deceased’s Soul (2018-Present)

Written by Jo Juhu & illustrated by Yuno

Also known as [R.I.P] Rest In Peace, Deceased’s Soul follows Jeongto and Isaeng, two childhood friends who were raised in two entirely different environments — a hospital and a funeral home. Despite them being very close, after ten years, they become estranged as they grow up for a simple reason: one must lead a soul to the afterlife, and the other attempts to revive them before they can die.

Deceased’s Soul, written by Jo Juhu and illustrated by Yuno, is a beautiful love story between two very different people, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. This fantasy manhwa also has a complex lore involving the Kings of Hell and even reincarnations.

4 Magician (2009–2018)

Written & illustrated by Kim Sarae

Kim Sarae’s Magician follows Ethermask, a man who is looking for a scripture, Iremi, a young woman who is only tagging along, and Enzu, a young boy who seeks revenge against his father’s murderer. This peculiar party goes through a thrilling journey to fulfill their different quests.

Magician doesn’t have the best art in comparison to many other series, but readers shouldn’t let this fool them. This manhwa is a perfect mix of fantasy, comedy, and drama, all in a medieval setting. There are over 500 chapters to read and explore, so it would be best to be in it for the long haul.

3 Lady Baby (2018-Present)

Written by Ju Hyeon & illustrated by Pingmin

When Calliope’s family is murdered, and her life ends because of an ongoing war, she travels back in time to when she was born. Taking this opportunity, she attempts to figure out the mystery of who murdered her family and stop it from occurring at all.

A perfect choice for readers looking to read something incredibly cheesy, Lady Baby was written by Ju Hyeon and illustrated by Pingmin. Although the story can be too corny sometimes, readers will find it impossible not to love the heroine, and they will root for her every step of the way.

2 Second Life Ranker (2019-Present)

Written by Nong Nong & illustrated by Sa Doyeon

Based on the novel of the same name, Second Life Ranker chronicles the story of Yeon-woo, a man who is searching for his twin brother, Jeong-woo Cha. When he stumbles upon his brother’s diary and discovers he was betrayed in an alternate universe, he decides to take Jeong-woo Cha’s place, uncover the mystery behind his betrayal, and take revenge on whoever killed his twin brother.

Second Life Ranker, written by Nong Nong and illustrated by Sa Doyeon, is a rarity in manhwa. Most popular series are mostly romantic, but not this one. Second Like Ranker’s thrilling combination of fantasy and action will have shonen fans wishing for more.

1 Tower Of God (2010-Present)

Written & illustrated by Lee Jong-Hui AKA S.I.U.

Written and illustrated by S.I.U., Tower of God follows Twenty-Fifth Bam, a determined hero who must climb the Tower in order to find Rachel, his childhood friend. This manhwa relates his quest, full of dangerous trials and courageous allies that will help him succeed.

Tower of God is so popular that it was the first manhwa to receive an anime adaption by Crunchyroll. The series’ first 13 episodes are already available, and a second season is on the way. This dark fantasy manhwa is a perfect choice for those who enjoy a survival-type plot and a storyline full of mind games.
