YouTube personality Mark Edward Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, is leading the charge on a film adaptation of Iron Lung, the best-selling 2022 horror video game created by David Szymanski.
As broken by Deadline, the film adaptation of Iron Lung has officially entered production in Austin, Texas. Markiplier is not only starring in the film, but also directing it from a script he wrote himself. The YouTuber is also self-financing and producing the project, with Will Hyde and Jeff Guerrero producing as well. Caroline Rose Kaplan (NCIS: New Orleans, Orange Is the New Black) is attached to star in Iron Lung opposite Markiplier. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being.

Markiplier initially joined YouTube in 2012, quickly establishing himself as a major figure within the site’s gaming content scene. Markiplier rose to prominence thanks to his Let’s Play-style videos, in which he often played horror games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Five Nights at Freddy’s (the latter of which is itself getting a film adaptation from Blumhouse). His channel currently sits at an impressive 34.7 million subscribers. He has since branched out into other forms of content, writing and directing YouTube Premium original series like A Heist with Markiplier and In Space with Markiplier. Markiplier also has a clothing line and a number of podcasts. He even starred in his own comic book limited series in 2016.

What Is Iron Lung?
Developed and published by Szymanski, Iron Lung initially launched for the PC on March 10, 2022, before making its way to the Nintendo Switch on Dec. 19, 2022. While the story of Markiplier’s film adaptation is currently unknown, the original game allows players to take control of a silent, unnamed convict who explores an ocean of blood on a desolate moon in a rusty, one-room submarine with no viewing ports. The short-form horror game has been praised for its simplicity and its deeply oppressive atmosphere. Markiplier first played Iron Lung on his YouTube channel in May 2022, with that initial video amassing 5.7 million views at the time of writing.
