as the day drew to its end
and retired over the horizon,
the night sky dipped low
and was scorched in its embrace.
smouldering from a burning kiss
aflame with the violence of passion
it brooded upon its solitude
and its own vast emptiness,
like the ocean refuses to stop kissing the sand
no matter how many times its turned away,
night will chase day relentlessly
and be spurned, scorned and scorched.
each evening across the heavens
they will play out their courtship –
an eternal longing to blend in the dusk
and to lie together at dawn,
an unquenchable thirst
that will only ever be denied.
for in their striving they forget
that they have always been one.
