myLeague Concept

When it comes to the Mineplex League as a whole, probably the number one question we as staff always get is — what’s the next league going to be? Or even, can you make my league “official”?

The interest to add a new league to the MCL’s portfolio is strong. If done right, it’s a definite way to secure growth and explore new gametypes and communities. Popular ideas in the past have included Super Smash Mobs, Capture the Flag, Castle Assault, and most recently Micro Battles.

However, it’s also an immense risk. The last league to join the the MCL was the Bridges League. But even when that occured, the MCL was not in a place to consider itself a brand or entity. 2017 was the first year for the Mineplex League to begin growing its social media presence, solidifying its online influence, and becoming a recognizable brand.

So the next league to become official will have to be perfect. 100% fool-proof. The minute the MCL announces its new league, whatever it may be, hundreds of players will be in line to play. But what if it flops? What if it struggles to survive? myLeague is a concept I’ve been interested in for the past few months, and its a potential solution to this daunting problem.

At its core, myLeague is a way for the community to experiment with new league ideas while allowing the Mineplex League to safely analyze the potential for such ideas. myLeague is by all means community-run. Each community-oriented league inside of myLeague requires little to no oversight from the Mineplex League, yet gives these leagues a backbone of security and infrastructure.

The premise is this: the Mineplex League launches an application process for community-run leagues to apply for entry into the myLeague program. If accepted, myLeague directors receive the following:

  1. A myLeague website — For example, a Super Smash Mobs league would be my.mpcleague.com/smash (or my.league.rip/smash). The website would be a single landing page which could include several functional components, such as: news posts, rankings, team rosters, and social media links. All of these features would be managable from an easily-accessible, secure admin panel only for directors and MCL staff.
  2. Documentation and Advice — Part of the myLeague onboarding process would be to provide clear documentation on how to successfully run a league while also following MCL procedures. For example, Public Relations guidelines, announcement formats, staff structuring, and community involvement guidelines could all be provided.
  3. Guidance — Because myLeague is a way for aspiring community-run leagues to become official, being a member of the myLeague program would allow directors to work closely with MCL staff on how best to run their league and be successful.
  4. Promotion — Joining the myLeague network means being promoted to a competitive community of over 3,000 players and 10,000 monthly online visitors.

The possibilities are endless. Not only does this allow the MCL to safely explore options for new leagues, but it also solidifies the MCL’s community outreach efforts. At the core of this project is community involvement.

What I’m personally most interested in, above all, is expanding this program beyond Mineplex. We are all likely familiar with the CvC League over at Hypixel. My experience with talking to its director has shown me they are severely lacking infrastructure and support.

We are in a fortunate position now to be working alongside Mineplex, but I would love to share our experience and guidance with a broader competitive community. Allowing leagues outside of Mineplex to apply for the myLeague program allows us to prove our ability and experience in league management, while also permeating the wider Minecraft competitive community.

If players wanted to host their own league on Badlion, we could support that. If players wanted to host leagues on Hypixel, we could be there. And most importantly, Mineplex leagues would remain our top priority and interest.

Consider these ideas carefully, because I think it’s the next step for the MCL. Even before suggesting taking over an existing Micro Battles League, or creating a Heroes of GWEN League, I truly believe the MCL should pursue this first.
