Thumbs up Ditology

- February & March 2018

What separates man from ape? Some might say its created in the image of God, mankind possesses the ability to communicate abstract thought, appreciate beauty, express love, some might say the ability to communicate through art, or its the “thumb.”

This months gallery features an Italian artist who lets all of us be correct. He works under the pseudonym Dito Von Tease, in reference to the burlesque dancer Dita and because ‘il dito’ means ‘the finger’. He creates incredibly portraits of famous face on his thumbs.

But in reality, The ‘Ditology’ project aims to look at our sense of identity and how we use disguises — particularly when we leave a ‘digital fingerprint’ online As stated on the website ditovontease.com,

“In the ‘digital age’, our fingers are the ‘tools’ we use to keep in touch with the world through touch screens, mouse pads and keyboards. In a sense, we are all ‘hiding behind a finger’ while surfing the internet and this mediation often makes us to feel free to express our ideas, opinions or sensations.”

It continues with comparisons to how we do this in our “real lives.” As well as how it is reflected in celebrity, from characters, artist, politicians, etc.

I was debating on having a gallery opening / thumb wrestling tournament with prizes, before switching out the gallery, if there is enough interest.
