Should Designers Code?

Getting to a great design is an incredible amount of work. There’s so much material in psychology, behavioural science, and human factors to learn and apply to software design that I can’t help but feel that also learning to code would mean the designer maybe hasn’t gone far enough in exploring these areas. Also, I know from experience that there are faster and more effective ways to communicate design to a development team than coding it for them.

Having said that – I recognize my own luxury in working with brilliant developers and sympathize with the designers on very small teams that also have to code out of necessity.
