Defining your personal brand for Thanksgiving

On the eve of the most celebrated holiday in the United States, a non-denominational one that centers on being thankful as some of the first arrivals to our shores hundreds of years ago, we ruminate on what defines our personal brand.

How are you defining yourself on Thanksgiving? What is most important to you? It seems to be spending time with loved ones, there are more people traveling this year than ever before. Perhaps that means we’re going after the intangibles of the simple pleasures: cherishing relationships, savoring those good foods, and being grateful for the abundance in our lives. Maybe you’re going to have a snooze after a dinner, or watch the football game, or catch up with Uncle Nick and Aunt Sally.

Although we are being hounded with advertisements pitching to us the need to start Holiday shopping during the day of Thanksgiving, we’re going to put that to the side and consider some of the kinder aspects of this holiday and how those can define us and give us meaning. When you think of the Americans serving in the armed forces, eating at some base somewhere and longing for home, I’m sure they’re not missing a run to the mall with hordes of people pushing and shouting. And how about those who no longer have homes after Hurricane Michael or the California fires, I’m sure they would like nothing better than a comfortable place to enjoy the day with family and friends.

Nobler minds than mine have tackled this question, even before there was a holiday:

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that

which is planted; A time to kill, and a Time to heal; a time to break down, and a

time to build up;

I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do

good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good

of all his labor, it is the gift of God. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be

forever: nothing can be put to it, or anything taken from it: and God doeth it,

that men should fear before him. (Ecclesiastes 3, King James Version)

The personal brand you present to the world should be gracious, giving. I know many do not feel this in their hearts and that’s exactly why others may not relate to that brand. For we as humans communicate in more ways than speaking. People know when you are being authentic.

Here we have this beautiful world we’ve been given, yes, fraught with difficulties, disagreements, politics and wars. Maybe a way to celebrate is to consider what you can do for others, reaching out to those less fortunate. Take some time to reflect and enjoy the time with loved ones while feeling gratitude. If you think about being true to your personal brand and wanting it to stand for something, ponder what defines your brand at Thanksgiving. Are you demonstrating a spirit of thankfulness in your everyday life? In a time when mean-spirited behavior seems to take the fore, dare to be kind and accepting. Be thankful even if it’s just for the breath that you are taking. Happy Thanksgiving.
