There’s a third possibility that’s missing:

The creation of a totally separate cave that is not the original socially constructed reality, but a reciprocal mirror image of it residing in the individual mind.

It would be the hardest one to escape from since no one else would be there and knowledge of the opposing reality the worst form of torture (not to mention the origin of the newest paranoia-inducing puppet shadows).
