So I Quit My Job

Some musings from the first day of working for myself

After my illustrious 3 and bit year career in accounting I quit my job a couple months back and after serving my notice period today was my first day working for myself.

I thought I would share some thoughts and experiences I've already encountered.

  1. Time flies

I woke up to my normal alarm at 7, donned my corgi onesie and got cracking. Over the weekend I had started putting an unorganised list of what I needed to get working on together, and so I already had a plan of action. I got cracking on a social media audit, trying to baseline where we were so we could measure growth.

At 10:45 my business partner called me for a catch up to try and make sure we were covering the bases during the day.

How in the world did it get to 10:45. This was supposed to be a straight forward task that took no more than an hour. This time flying business occurred through the whole day. When you’re doing something for you, and something you enjoy, it takes longer.

2.You sorta miss those colleagues

Somewhere around 4ish I realised I was monotone humming. While I was listening to music, deep down I missed the buzz of people. I took a coffee break and just stared out the window at people walking down the street, imagining what client issues they were having or what silly stories they would share at work that day.

3.You don’t get distracted

This might tie in with the first issue. Through the whole day my mind didn’t wonder, I didn’t surf blogs, I didn’t tweet a lot. When you’re doing something for yourself distractions have no place.
