While I would like to see slightly more female-led films. The problem with a Ghostbusters reboot is there was no need for one, just as there was no need to reboot other classic films from the 80s (Robocop, Total Recall) or indeed any decade really.
Regardless of the cast, fans of the original are aggravated because Hollywood made a worse version of a movie they like. Also the whole genre swap thing was silly and unnecessary. Would you not complain if they made a reboot of Clueless, Mean Girls or The Hunger Games with men as the lead characters?
What you point out about the success of female-led films is both perfectly valid and accurate, it quite simply sucks. Hopefully the dynamic of the industry will change in the next few years. On the flip side, Suicide Squad has been panned critically but is receiving it’s only real praise for Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn. So maybe not all female actors in badly rated films are doomed, Gal Gadot has Wonder Woman coming out after featuring in the dreadful Batman vs Superman. Also, I wouldn’t be suprised to see Margot starring in an all female-led Harley Quinn feature in the next few years. Here’s hoping that down the line, films won’t be labeled as misogynist or feminist but just as films starring both men and/or women in the lead roles.
